Solving MAX-XOR-SAT Problems with Stochastic Local Search

چکیده

The MAX-SAT problem is to find a truth assignment that satisfies the maximum number of clauses in a finite set of logical clauses. In the special case of MAX-XOR-SAT, arising from Linear Cryptanalysis, each clause is a set of literals joined by exclusive-or (xor). Solving MAX-XOR-SAT is useful in finding keys to decrypt intercepted encrypted messages. This report presents and evaluates Xor-WalkSAT, a method for solving MAX-XOR-SAT. Xor-WalkSAT is a modification to the WalkSAT stochastic local search procedure, which was developed to solve SAT problems formulated in conjunctive normal form. Two alternatives are also presented: an algebraic method for solving XOR-SAT, where all the clauses are satisfiable, and a tranlation method, where the MAX-XOR-SAT problem is translated into conjunctive normal form and solved by WalkSAT.

Solving Problems with Hard and Soft Constraints Using a Stochastic Algorithm for MAX-SAT

Stochastic local search is an effective technique for solving certain classes of large, hard propositional satisfiability problems, including propositional encodings of problems such as circuit synthesis and graph coloring (Selman, Levesque, and Mitchell 1992; Selman, Kautz, and Cohen 1994). Many problems of interest to AI and operations research cannot be conveniently encoded as simple satisfi...

On the Relative Merits of Simple Local Search Methods for the MAX-SAT Problem

Algorithms based on local search are popular for solving many optimization problems including the maximum satisfiability problem (MAXSAT). With regard to MAXSAT, the state of the art in performance for universal (i.e. non specialized solvers) seems to be variants of Simulated Annealing (SA) and MaxWalkSat (MWS), stochastic local search methods. Local search methods are conceptually simple, and ...

Scaling and Probabilistic Smoothing: Dynamic Local Search for Unweighted MAX-SAT

In this paper, we study the behaviour of the Scaling and Probabilistic Smoothing (SAPS) dynamic local search algorithm on the unweighted MAXSAT problem. MAX-SAT is a conceptually simple combinatorial problem of substantial theoretical and practical interest; many application-relevant problems, including scheduling problems or most probable explanation finding in Bayes nets, can be encoded and s...

A Probability Distribution Strategy with Efficient Clause Selection for Hard Max-SAT Formulas

Many real-world problems involving constraints can be regarded as instances of the Max-SAT problem, which is the optimization variant of the classic satisfiability problem. In this paper, we propose a novel probabilistic approach for Max-SAT called ProMS. Our algorithm relies on a stochastic local search strategy using a novel probability distribution function with two strategies for picking va...

The COMPSET Algorithm for Subset Selection

Subset selection problems are relevant in many domains. Unfortunately, their combinatorial nature prohibits solving them optimally in most cases. Local search algorithms have been applied to subset selection with varying degrees of success. This work presents COMPSET, a general algorithm for subset selection that invokes an existing local search algorithm from a random subset and its complement...
